Person
Kyansittha
King of Pagan (1084–1112/1113) who, according to the chronicles, had twice been banished from the court before he was chosen king after the death of Sawlu. He defeated the Mon rebels of Pegu, was crowned by the monk Shin Arahan, completed the Shwezigon pagoda, repaired the Mahabodhi temple at Bodh Gaya and built the Ananda temple; his envoys were received at the Song court in 1106 with the honours due to a great sovereign. Many of his inscriptions are in Mon, then the language of learning in Pagan.
