Lan Xang

Lao kingdom of the middle Mekong (1353–1707), ‘the land of a million elephants and the white parasol’, founded by Fa Ngum. Its capital was Muang Sua, later called Luang Prabang after the Phra Bang image of the Buddha, and from 1560 Vientiane; in 1707 it split into the kingdoms of Luang Prabang and Vientiane, from which Champasak soon broke away.
