Lý Thái Tổ (Lý Công Uẩn)
Founder of the Lý dynasty, born Lý Công Uẩn (974–1028). Brought up among Buddhist monks, he rose to command the palace guard at Hoa Lư and in late 1009, after the death of King Lê Long Đĩnh, was proclaimed king. In 1010 he moved the capital to Đại La, which he renamed Thăng Long; his reign and those of his son and grandson brought six decades of internal peace and growing royal power.
