Lý Thường Kiệt
Vietnamese general (1019–1105), a palace eunuch who rose in the service of the Lý kings and received the royal surname. He captured the Cham king Rudravarman III in 1069, led the pre-emptive invasion of southern China in 1075–1076 and defended Đại Việt against the Song on the Như Nguyệt River in 1077; later historians attributed to him the poem ‘Mountains and Rivers of the Southern Country’.
