Mahmud al-Kashgari

Turkic scholar from a family related to the Karakhanid dynasty — born, by the usual account, in Barsgan on Lake Issyk-Kul, whose head his father was. Around 1057 he left his homeland as a political refugee and settled in Baghdad, where in 1072–1074 he compiled the Dīwān Lughāt al-Turk, the first comprehensive dictionary of the Turkic languages. His dates of birth and death are uncertain; tradition places his tomb at Opal near Kashgar.
