Manuel I Komnenos
Byzantine emperor (1143–1180), grandson of Alexios I, under whom the Komnenian restoration had its last flowering. He steered the Second Crusade through his empire, invaded Norman Italy, made the crusader states and Hungary Byzantine dependants and joined the Kingdom of Jerusalem against Fatimid Egypt, but was defeated by the Seljuks of Rum at Myriokephalon (1176).
