Mayapan
Postclassic Maya city in north-western Yucatán, about 40 km south-east of Mérida, which from the 1220s to the 1440s was the political and cultural capital of the Maya of the peninsula. It was ruled by the Cocom lineage together with the lords of the subject towns, who had to keep members of their families in the city; around 1441 it was destroyed in a revolt led by the Xiu, after which Yucatán broke up into rival city-states.
