Mesrop Mashtots
Armenian monk, scholar and missionary who had served in the royal chancery; around 405, with the support of Catholicos Sahak and King Vramshapuh, he created the Armenian alphabet, then founded schools and led the translation of the Bible into Armenian. The Armenian Church venerates him as a saint.
