Mississippian culture
Archaeological culture of the Mississippi valley and the south-eastern United States from about the 10th to the 16th century, marked by maize farming, flat-topped platform mounds around plazas and chiefdoms ruled from ceremonial centres such as Cahokia, Moundville and Etowah. Many of its chiefdoms were still flourishing when the Spanish expedition of Hernando de Soto passed through the region in 1539–1543, and its chronicles are among the first written accounts of Mississippian peoples.
