Mixtecs
Indigenous people of the Mixteca region of Oaxaca, Puebla and Guerrero in southern Mexico, speakers of Oto-Manguean Mixtec languages. In the Postclassic period they were divided into many small kingdoms of the Mixteca Alta, Baja and Costa, whose rulers' genealogies, marriages and wars are recorded in painted screenfold codices; the Spanish conquered them in the 16th century, and Mixtec is still spoken today.
