Möngke Khan

Eldest son of Tolui and fourth great khan of the Mongol Empire (1251–1259), proclaimed on 1 July 1251 at Köde’e Aral. He ordered an empire-wide census, sent his brother Hulagu against the Ismailis and the Abbasid caliphate and his brother Kublai against the kingdom of Dali, and received William of Rubruck at his court in 1254. He died in August 1259 during the siege of the Song fortress of Diaoyucheng, near present-day Chongqing.
