William of Rubruck
Flemish Franciscan from Rubrouck who accompanied Louis IX of France on the Seventh Crusade and in 1253–1255 travelled as a missionary to the court of the great khan Möngke in Karakorum. His report to the king, the Itinerarium, describes the Mongols, their capital and its many peoples and faiths; Roger Bacon drew on it in his Opus Majus.
