Person1076–1132
Mstislav the Great
Eldest son of Vladimir Monomakh and Gytha of Wessex, known in the Norse sagas as Harald. He ruled Novgorod for most of the years 1088–1117, then Belgorod near Kyiv, and succeeded his father as grand prince of Kyiv in 1125. He fought the Cumans, the Lithuanians and Polotsk, whose princes he sent off to Byzantium in 1129. Historians regard him as the last ruler of a united Rus’: its break-up into separate principalities is most often dated from his death in April 1132.
