Mu'izz al-Dawla

Ahmad ibn Buya, the youngest of the three Buyid brothers, sons of a Daylamite fisherman. After campaigns in Kerman and Khuzistan he entered Baghdad without a fight in December 945, received from the caliph the title Mu'izz al-Dawla, ‘Fortifier of the State’, and in January 946 deposed the caliph al-Mustakfi in favour of al-Muti. He ruled Iraq until his death in 967, in theory as the caliph's commander-in-chief and in practice as its master, though he deferred to his elder brothers.
