Ngô Quyền
Vietnamese ruler from Đường Lâm, son-in-law and general of Dương Đình Nghệ, the governor of the former Tang protectorate of Annam. After Dương’s murder he destroyed the Southern Han fleet on the Bạch Đằng River in 938, and in the spring of 939 he proclaimed himself king (vương) with his capital at Cổ Loa, founding the Ngô dynasty. Vietnamese historians honour him as the restorer of the country’s independence.
