Pulakeshin I
First sovereign king of the Chalukyas of Badami (c. 540–566), son of Ranaraga and grandson of Jayasimha. His inscription of 543 on the cliff of Vatapi, in which he is styled Vallabheshvara, records that he had performed the horse sacrifice and made the hill of Vatapi an impregnable citadel. He was succeeded by his sons Kirtivarman I and Mangalesha.
