Pyu city-states
Walled city-states of the Tibeto-Burman-speaking Pyu in the dry zone of the Irrawaddy valley — Halin, Beikthano, Sri Ksetra and others — known to the Chinese as Piao. Buddhist and in close contact with India, they sent embassies to the Tang court in the early 9th century; weakened by the raids of Nanzhao, they were gradually absorbed by the Burmans of Pagan. Halin, Beikthano and Sri Ksetra were inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2014.
