Rajaraja I
Chola king (985–1014), born Arumolivarman, the younger son of Sundara Chola. In thirty years he made the Cholas the leading power of South India: he defeated the Pandyas and the rulers of Kerala, conquered northern Sri Lanka and the Ganga and Nolamba lands of the southern Deccan, fought the Western Chalukyas and built the great temple of Rajarajeshvara (the Brihadisvara) at Thanjavur, completed in 1010. Under his son Rajendra I the empire reached its greatest extent.
