State300 BC – AD 1279
Chola dynasty
Tamil dynasty of the Kaveri delta, already named in the edicts of Ashoka in the 3rd century BC and celebrated in Sangam poetry. After centuries of obscurity it rose again about 850, when Vijayalaya took Thanjavur; his successors overthrew the Pallavas, and in the 11th century, under Rajaraja I and Rajendra I, the Cholas dominated South India and sent their fleets to Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia. The dynasty ended in 1279.
