Richard II of England
King of England from 1377 to 1399, the son of Edward the Black Prince, who came to the throne at the age of ten. At fourteen he faced the Peasants’ Revolt, meeting the rebels at Mile End and Smithfield and then presiding over its suppression. He later sought peace with France, quarrelled with the great nobles and in 1399 was deposed by his cousin Henry Bolingbroke (Henry IV); he is thought to have been starved to death in captivity early in 1400.
