Stefan Nemanja
Grand župan of Serbia from the late 1160s to 1196 and founder of the Nemanjić dynasty. Forced to submit to Manuel I in 1172, he later took Niš and other Byzantine towns and received Frederick Barbarossa at Niš in 1189. In 1196 he abdicated in favour of his son Stefan, became the monk Simeon and with his son Sava restored Hilandar on Mount Athos; the Serbian Church venerates him as St Simeon the Myrrh-streaming.
