Theophilos

Byzantine emperor (829–842) of the Amorian dynasty, son of Michael II and the last emperor to support iconoclasm; an active builder. He fought the Abbasids with mixed success; in 838 an army of Caliph al-Mu'tasim defeated him at Anzen, and the caliph sacked Amorium.
