Vidyadhara (Chandella)

Chandella king of Jejakabhukti in central India (c. 1003–1035), the son and successor of Ganda, who extended Chandella power between the Chambal and the Narmada. Muslim chroniclers, who call him Bida or Nanda, describe his encounters with Mahmud of Ghazni: in 1019 he withdrew before Mahmud’s army, and in 1022 Mahmud besieged Gwalior and the Chandella fortress of Kalanjara and left after receiving elephants — tribute according to the chroniclers, an exchange of gifts in the view of the historian S. K. Mitra. The Kandariya Mahadeva temple at Khajuraho is usually attributed to him.
