Wang Anshi
Chinese statesman, writer and poet of the Song dynasty, author of the New Policies. A jinshi graduate of 1042 from Linchuan, he urged reform in a long memorial to Emperor Renzong in 1058 and, as assistant chief councillor from 1069 and chief councillor in 1071–1074 and 1075–1076 under Emperor Shenzong, introduced sweeping fiscal, military and educational reforms that divided the officials into Reformers and Conservatives; he is also counted among the Eight Great Prose Masters of the Tang and Song.
