Wilfrid
Northumbrian churchman, educated at Lindisfarne, Canterbury, in Gaul and in Rome, who spoke for the Roman party at the Synod of Whitby (664) and became bishop of the Northumbrians. Repeatedly expelled by the kings, he twice appealed to Rome, converted the South Saxons, and was abbot of Ripon and founder of Hexham.
