Wu Zetian
Wu Zhao, a concubine of Taizong who became Gaozong’s empress in 655, ruled through her husband and then through her sons, and in 690 proclaimed her own Zhou dynasty and reigned as emperor — the only undisputed female sovereign in Chinese history. She was deposed in a palace coup in February 705 and died that December.
