Yi Seong-gye (Taejo of Joseon)

Korean general and founder of the Joseon dynasty (1335–1408), king as Taejo from 1392 to 1398. Born in the north-east, then under Yuan control, he made his name fighting the Red Turbans, Mongol commanders and Japanese pirates; in 1388 he turned back the army sent against Ming Liaodong, took power in Goryeo and in 1392 ascended the throne. He moved the capital to Hanyang (Seoul) and abdicated in 1398, after his sons had fought over the succession.
