Yue Fei

Chinese general of the Southern Song from Tangyin in Henan, the most successful Song commander in the wars against the Jurchen Jin. In 1140 his army defeated the Jin at Yancheng and advanced to within 45 li of Kaifeng before he was recalled; an opponent of peace, he was stripped of his command, imprisoned on a charge of treason and put to death on 27 January 1142. Rehabilitated in 1162, he became a national hero and a model of loyalty.
