Central Asia and the Steppe (14th – mid-15th c.)

Central Asia and the steppe from 1301 to the mid-15th century: the plague of 1338–1339 in the Chüy valley near Lake Issyk-Kul, whose victims, a 2022 ancient-DNA study found, carried the strain ancestral to the Black Death; the break-up of the Chagatai ulus into Moghulistan and Transoxiana; and the rise of Timur, who from Samarkand waged war from the Volga to Delhi and Anatolia and filled his capital with monumental buildings.
