Founding of the Delhi Sultanate
After the assassination of the Ghurid sultan Muhammad of Ghor, his governor in India, the former slave soldier (ghulam) Qutb ud-Din Aibak, became an independent ruler; the Delhi Sultanate begins with him.

Muhammad of Ghor was assassinated on 15 March 1206. Aibak defended the Ghurid possessions in northern India against another commander, Taj al-Din Yildiz, and ruled from Lahore; later Delhi became the sultanate’s main capital. The Delhi Sultanate, which saw five dynasties succeed one another, lasted until 1526.
The founding of the sultanate coincided with the kurultai that proclaimed Genghis Khan: in a single year two new powers arose in the south and in the north of Asia.
