First Battle of Panipat
Babur, the ruler of Kabul, defeated the army of the Delhi sultan Ibrahim Lodi, who was killed in the battle, and laid the foundations of the Mughal Empire.

Babur had about 12,000 men against the sultan’s 50,000–70,000 and some 1,000 war elephants. Fire from matchlocks and cannon pinned down the centre of the Delhi army while mounted archers struck at its flanks, and the roar of the guns threw the elephants into panic. It was one of the first battles in India to be decided by gunpowder. The date is given according to the Julian calendar.
