Alauddin Khalji becomes Sultan of Delhi
Alauddin Khalji, the governor of Kara, murdered his uncle and father-in-law, Sultan Jalaluddin, seized Delhi and was proclaimed sultan; during his twenty-year reign he repelled several Mongol invasions.

With the plunder taken in a raid on wealthy Devagiri in the Deccan, Alauddin raised an army. On 20 July 1296, meeting the sultan at Kara on the Ganges, he had him killed and proclaimed himself ruler, and in October he marched on the capital; Jalaluddin’s son fled to Multan, and on 21 October 1296 Alauddin was proclaimed sultan in Delhi.
In 1297–1299 his armies repulsed raids by the Mongols of the Chagatai Khanate in the Punjab, in Sindh and at the very gates of Delhi (the Battle of Kili, 1299). He later subjugated Gujarat and the Rajput kingdoms, and his general Malik Kafur forced the kingdoms of the Deccan to pay tribute.
