Founding of Fort Ross
An expedition of the Russian-American Company led by Ivan Kuskov founded Fort Ross on the coast of California, 80 km north of San Francisco — the southernmost Russian settlement in North America.

Kuskov arrived at Rumyantsev Bay (now Bodega Bay) in March 1812; the fort was consecrated on 30 August (11 September), the name day of Alexander I. The settlement was meant to supply Russian America with food and served as a base for fur hunting; in 1841 the company sold it to John Sutter.
