British conquest of Java
An expedition from British India landed near Batavia on 4 August 1811 and within six weeks took Java, the last major possession of Napoleonic France in the East: after Holland was annexed to France, the Dutch colonies had become French.

The idea of the expedition was put to Lord Minto, the Governor-General of India, by Stamford Raffles, an official of the East India Company. About 12,000 British and Indian soldiers landed near Batavia, occupied the city without a fight on 8 August, stormed the fortified camp of Meester Cornelis on the night of 25–26 August, and on 18 September Governor-General Jan Willem Janssens capitulated.
Raffles became lieutenant-governor of the island and began reforms of the administration and land tenure. Under the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1814 Java was returned to the Netherlands, and in 1816 it passed back under Dutch rule.
