Abbot Suger
Abbot of Saint-Denis from 1122, counsellor of Louis VI and Louis VII and regent of France while Louis VII was on the Second Crusade. His rebuilding of the abbey church — the west front consecrated in 1140, the choir in 1144 — is often cited as the first building in the Gothic style, and he described the work in two books of his own.
