'Adud al-Dawla

Fanna Khusraw, son of Rukn al-Dawla, the most powerful of the Buyid rulers. Emir of Fars from 949 with his court at Shiraz, he defeated his cousin Izz al-Dawla in 977–978, took Iraq and by 980 united the Buyid lands under his rule, styling himself shahanshah. A patron of scholars — the astronomer al-Sufi dedicated to him his Book of the Fixed Stars — he built in Baghdad the great hospital named after him, al-Bimaristan al-Adudi.
