Aghlabids
Arab dynasty that ruled Ifriqiya from 800 to 909 from its palace cities near Kairouan (al-Abbasiyya, then Raqqada), nominally as vassals of the Abbasids. From 827 it conquered Sicily, as well as Malta and parts of southern Italy; its mosques and public works are among the oldest Islamic monuments of the region, and the Fatimids overthrew it in 909.
