Harun al-Rashid
Fifth Abbasid caliph (786–809). His reign, with Baghdad flourishing as a centre of learning and trade, is traditionally counted as the beginning of the Islamic Golden Age; he waged war on Byzantium, exchanged embassies with Charlemagne and became a hero of the Thousand and One Nights.
