Ahmad ibn Tulun
Son of Tulun, a Turk sent as tribute to al-Ma'mun; he was trained as a soldier at Samarra and studied religion at Tarsus. Sent to Egypt in 868 as deputy governor, he made himself its virtually independent ruler, added Syria in 878, built the new capital al-Qata'i with the mosque that bears his name, and founded the Tulunid dynasty.
