Person842–891
Al-Muwaffaq
Abu Ahmad Talha, Abbasid prince, son of al-Mutawakkil, who from the early 870s was the de facto regent of the caliphate for his brother al-Mu'tamid. He stopped the Saffarid Ya'qub ibn al-Layth at Dayr al-Aqul near Baghdad (876), led the long war that crushed the Zanj rebellion (883) and quarrelled with Ahmad ibn Tulun over the revenues of Egypt; his son became caliph as al-Mu'tadid.
