Person
al-Bakri
Abu Ubayd Abdallah al-Bakri, Arab geographer and philologist of al-Andalus, son of the ruler of a short-lived principality at Huelva. He lived in Córdoba, Almería and Seville and never travelled to the lands he described: his Book of Roads and Kingdoms (1068), compiled from earlier writers and from merchants' reports, is one of the most important sources for the history of West Africa, and he also wrote a dictionary of the place names of Arabia.
