Al-Saffah
Abu al-Abbas Abd Allah ibn Muhammad, the first Abbasid caliph (749–754), a descendant of the Prophet’s uncle al-Abbas. After his brother, the imam Ibrahim, died in Umayyad captivity, he came to Kufa in secret and was acknowledged as caliph in its mosque in November 749; in 750 his armies destroyed the Umayyads. His epithet al-Saffah is usually rendered ‘the Blood-Shedder’, though some scholars read it as ‘the Generous’. He died at al-Anbar in 754 and was succeeded by his brother al-Mansur.
