Ashikaga Takauji
Warrior of the Ashikaga branch of the Minamoto and founder of the Ashikaga (Muromachi) shogunate (1305–1358). Sent by the Kamakura shogunate against Go-Daigo in 1333, he went over to the emperor and destroyed the shogunate’s headquarters in Kyoto; two years later he broke with the Kenmu government, in 1336 enthroned an emperor of the rival imperial line, and in 1338 he was appointed shogun. His last years were troubled by the Kannō disturbance, the war with his brother Tadayoshi.
