Person1288–1339
Emperor Go-Daigo
The 96th emperor of Japan in the traditional count (r. 1318–1339). Resolved to rule in person, he twice plotted against the Kamakura shogunate (1324 and 1331), was exiled to the Oki Islands, escaped in 1333 and, after the fall of Kamakura, restored direct imperial rule — the Kenmu Restoration. Driven from Kyoto by Ashikaga Takauji, he established the Southern Court at Yoshino in 1337 and died there two years later.
