Kusunoki Masashige

Warrior of Kawachi and a celebrated supporter of Emperor Go-Daigo (died 1336). His defence of Chihaya Castle in 1333 held down the shogunate’s armies while revolts spread across Japan, and under the Kenmu Restoration he sat in the emperor’s Records Office. Sent against Ashikaga Takauji’s returning army in a hopeless position, he took his own life after the defeat at Minatogawa in 1336; from the Edo period until 1945 he was revered as the model of loyalty to the throne.
