Ashikaga Yoshimitsu
The third Ashikaga shogun (1358–1408; shogun from 1369 to 1394), grandson of Takauji. He curbed the great provincial lords, ended the schism of the Northern and Southern Courts in 1392 and, after handing the office to his son, went on dominating court and shogunate from his Kitayama villa, where the Golden Pavilion was built. A patron of the arts, he took Kan'ami and Zeami under his protection, and in 1401 he opened official relations with Ming China.
