Zeami Motokiyo
Japanese Noh actor, playwright and theorist (c. 1363 – c. 1443), son of Kan'ami. As a boy he won the favour of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu; after his father’s death in 1384 he led the Kanze troupe, perfected the ‘dream’ Noh (mugen nō) and its ideal of yūgen, wrote many plays still performed, such as Takasago and Izutsu, and set out his art in treatises beginning with the Fūshikaden. In 1434 the shogun Ashikaga Yoshinori exiled him to the island of Sado.
