Bernard of Clairvaux
Cistercian monk, abbot of Clairvaux from 1115, mystic and the most influential churchman of his age. He helped to spread the Cistercian order across Latin Europe, outlined the rule of the Knights Templar at the Council of Troyes (1129, or 1128 by some accounts), backed Innocent II in the schism of 1130 and preached the Second Crusade at Vézelay (1146).
