Chichén Itzá
Maya city in northern Yucatán, Mexico, which bears the name of the Itza. A Late Classic town that rose in the 9th century, in the 10th it became the capital of a state controlling north and central Yucatán and its sea trade, and by about 1100 it had declined as a regional centre. Its ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
