Vijayalaya Chola
Founder of the imperial line of the Cholas, who took Thanjavur from the Muttarayar chiefs about 850 and made it his capital; according to the later Tiruvalangadu plates, he built there a temple of the goddess Nishumbhasudini (Durga). He was perhaps a Pallava feudatory; his son Aditya I, who succeeded him in 871, overthrew the Pallavas.
